Northern "Red-Shafted" Flicker

While in Carrizo Canyon in SE Colorado I watched a Red-Shafted flicker drinking from a spot on the trunk about 30 feet up where a limb had fallen. It seemed to be water that had accumulated in the hollow area, but I guess it could have been sap. I got some video of it.

Hey-that's pretty cool!We've got the Yellow-shafted around here.-I wonder if the two cross breed?

Yeah, they do. Western Kansas is a hot bed for cross breeding flickers.

Great pictures! It is interesting how similar they look to the ones we have around here and yet are very distinct as well. I've only seen the yellow shafted which frequent our yard here in Nebraska.
